HEALTH PROMOTION UNIT
Role (1)
The main function of the unit is to provide supportive services on all aspects of health promotion and health education to all programs in the State Health Department Sarawak, in particular and Ministry of Health, in general. The main purpose of health promotion and health education is to achieve attitudinal and behavioral changes of the people through educational activities, for the purpose of improving health status of individual, family and community through their own actions and efforts.

More specifically, it aims to:
Generate interest amongst the community regarding the importance of good health.
Create awareness amongst the community on how to improve their health status and take steps to prevent diseases.
Make the community aware of available health services and facilities so that they can utilize them fully and correctly, and
Make good health a benefit valued by the community.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To enhance health knowledge and inculcate positive attitudes towards health and promote the adoption of healthful living among the individual, family and community as a whole.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
· To provide relevant health information to specific target groups and public in general in order to increase their health awareness and knowledge. · To facilitate the development of positive health attitudes. · T o promote the adoption of healthy lifestyle.
STRATEGIES
? Integrating health promotion and health education component into all programs of Sarawak Health Department.? Conducting training in health promotion and health education for health staff and staff of health-related agencies so that they can disseminate health information accurately and more effectively.

Utilizing the mass media as a channel to support the dissemination of health information to the general public.? Carrying our reach activities related to health education for the purpose of evaluating and improving relevant health programs ,? Improving monitoring, recording and reporting system of health education programs.

First established on an ad hoc basis in 1974.
Became permanent when 3 HEO appointed in 1977 •Presently, there are 8 HEO - One each in Kuching, Samarahan, Sarikei, Sri Aman, Limbang, Sarawak General Hospital, Sibu Hospital State Health Office

HPU is under the charge of a Senior Health Education Officer S2 who is responsible to the Deputy Director of Health(Public Health). •The other staffs are Health Inspector, translators, photographer, artist, clerk, projectionist, offset machine operator, public worker and a driver

Activities
· Healthy Lifestyle Campaign.
Launched on 25 May 1991 to increase the awareness and knowledge of the Malaysian public about the diseases that arise as a result of unhealthy lifestyles and to promote the adoption of healthy practices and lifestyles.

To review and propose changes to the current work processes for the purpose of quality improvement in the following areas: · Effective strategies and channels for dissemination of information including uses of IT/ICT.· Launch of campaigns – efficient and cost- effective strategies.· Equitable and sustainable training of health staff and facilitators – role of Divisional HPU.

Printing and distribution of educational materials – appropriateness, timeliness and cost-saving considering possibility of decentralization. · Following the guideline as mentioned on ISO 9000 manual.
Updating heath education/patient education guidelines and protocols at the hospital level.
