DENTAL

DENTAL PROGRAM

The objective of the Dental Program is to achieve the best possible dental health status of the population through the provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative dental services.Priority of service is given to pre-school and school children, as well as ante-natal mothers. The school dental service comprises 124 static dental clinics in primary schools, and 24 static dental clinics in secondary schools, in addition to 39 mobile dental squads. The dental service covered 236,738(86.7%) primary school students and 40,756(22.7%) secondary school children in 2001.

Outpatient dental services are available in all the main health centres and polyclinics, while specialist dental services are only available at the Sarawak General Hospital. However, Tanah Puteh Polyclinic in Kuching also provides orthodontic services to patients. In 2001, the outpatient dental clinics attended to 69,200 patients with a total of 119,147 attendances.

Other projects under the Dental Program include intensification of the water fluoridation program (which presently covers 57% of the population); dental care for pre-school children attending day-care centres; extension of dental care to medically-compromised patients attending specialist clinics.
